Urgent Care Q & A

What dental issues require urgent care?

You can consider essentially any dental issue that’s causing you significant pain a good reason to seek urgent care.

Situations requiring urgent dental care may include:

  • A loose or misaligned tooth following a blow to the face or mouth
  • A bump or red, swollen area in the gums, which can indicate an infection or abscess that may become life-threatening
  • Loss of a filling
  • A chipped tooth that’s causing pain
  • A cracked or fractured tooth, which typically indicates damage to the inner tooth structures as well as the outer tooth
  • A laceration to the inner mucosal lining of your cheeks, gums, or lips

Depending on the nature of your injury or the reason for your tooth pain, Dr. Kimche may recommend a root canal or a filling to restore your tooth. Sometimes, however, a tooth simply cannot be saved. In that case, he may recommend extraction and a dental implant or bridge to replace the missing tooth.

For fillings, Dr. Kimche uses tooth-colored material that bonds strongly with your teeth and disappears from view once it dries. Regardless of your issue, you can also rely on Dr. Kimche’s expertise and gentle techniques to greatly diminish your discomfort during and after the procedure.

What is a root canal?

A root canal is often used to save a badly infected or decayed tooth. It becomes necessary when decay reaches the roots or pulp of your inner tooth. During the procedure, Dr. Kimche carefully cleans away the pulp inside your tooth, disinfects and reshapes the root canals, and places a filling to seal the space.

The tooth is then covered with a crown to restore its cosmetic appearance and strength. Many dentists apply a temporary crown immediately after a root canal and then require you to return to have a permanent crown placed at a later date.

Dr. Kimche uses advanced technology to create a custom, permanent crown during your initial visit. The material he uses provides the same strength and durability offered by traditional crowns and eliminates the inconvenience of returning for another office visit. It also spares you the weeks of waiting that’s typically required to manufacture a crown at an outside lab.
